Fuerteventura is one of the Canary Islands most popular holiday destinations, with many renting Fuerteventura Apartments and others renting luxury Fuerteventura Villas. This is a short guide to Fuerteventuras many beaches.

With the average temperature in Fuerteventura ranging from 17°C in January to 25°C in August, its no surprise to find that most of its visitors choose to relax and soak up the sun on the beach. Fuerteventura is home to over 150 beaches, with over 50km of stunning white and golden sand, more than any of the other canary islands. The World Championship speed and slalom wind-surfing events are held here every August. Flag Beach Windsurf Centre offers excellent surf from body boarding, surfing, wind surfing and kite surfing.

Some of Fuerteventuras more notable beaches include;

Ajuy – The pitch black fine sand and the blue water of Ajuy beach make a great destination for tourists. Due to the torrential surge, you should avoid swimming here. The beach is always well-visited but not for bathing but rather as a sight to behold. Ajuy beach is not recommended for children.

Caleta de Fuste – The sand at Caleta de Fuste is light-coloured and fine with some pebbles near the water. The beach is ideal for children since the water is so calm. You can do various water sports like surfing or jet skiing. On the beach there are mostly tourists from the surrounding hotels.

Cofete – Cofete beach is not suitable for bathing or Children because of high waves and a strong current. The beach is deserted, and in the background you can see the mountains of Jandia. The beach appears breathtakingly eerie but nevertheless beautiful. On the 2-3 km stretch of beach there are no tourists or locals. If you visit Fuerteventura, you should spend some time exploring this piece of pristine nature and the little village “Cofete” with a pub.

Corralejo – In Corralejo there are several small bays. The largest bay, which is situated directly in Corralejo, is about 200 m long. The sand is light-coloured and the beach is enclosed by rocks on either side. There is a surfing school for those wishing to try something more then soaking up the sun. From the beach, you have a good view of Corralejo Port and the island “Los Lobos”. Further away you can also see the neighbouring island of Lanzarote.

Corralejo dunes – South of Corralejo there is the 11 km long dune area of the National Park. The sand is very light-coloured and fine. From the beach you have a fantastic view of the islands Los Lobos and Lanzarote. The beach is suitable for children and there is also a marked off area for wind surfers and kite surfers.

Costa Calma – Costa Calma is a large bay. Southwards you can walk along the beach to Morro Jable for 21km. In the north the beach is limited by black rocks extending into the sea. Hotels and apartments are situated directly behind the beach and are not separated by a road or promenade. Costa Calma beach is suitable for children since the waters are very calm.

El Cotillo – El Cotillo is a developed area with regard to tourism. This is what makes this beach so lovely: few tourists. The whole bathing area consists of several bays separated from each other by lava rocks and stones in the sea. Although the bay is situated on the west coast, it is possible to bathe here. The beach is also suitable for children since the sea is very shallow.

Esquinzo Beach – Playa de Esquinzo is a small and tranquil Blue Flag Beach by the small town of Esquinzo. The beach consists partly of light-coloured sand, partly of stones and is suitable for children. A little knowledge of German would help here though as most of the tourists here are German as is much of the entertainment.

Jandia – Jandia is a 20km stretch of Blue Flag Beach running between Morro Jable and Costa Calma. The Beach is split into sections, and are known to host the yearly World Windsurfing speed and slalom event in August. There is a shallower section that is perfect for children and families.

La Pared – This small bay is perfect for relaxing. The current makes it unsuitable for bathing, so it’s quiet. This beach is best reserved for those who are happy to sunbathe while listening to the waves.

Mal Nombre – This beach is instantly recognisable thanks to its round “stone castles”. These are small, round stone walls that protect sunbathers from the wind, they are popular however, so getting to the beach early is a must if you want one. The Beach is calm most of the time, and the water is shallow and suitable for children.

Sotavento – Playa de Sotavento is split into two parts “Playa Risco del Paso” and “Playa Barca”. This beach is not recommended for children or sunbathers, high winds mean that sunbathers will find it difficult to find a protected area (though there are some). The beaches are used by many surfers and kite boarders, so although the water is shallow those with children should be careful here.
